Famous Danish sea trout fly - The Slagter Fly (The Butcher fly)
Kim “Slagter” Nyborg – The designer behind the Slagter Fly (The Butcher Fly)
It is our late friend and Fishmadman co-worker Kim Nyborg who is the designer behind the Slagter Fly (The Butcher Fly) – Kim is known across Scandinavia for this subtle and perfect imitation of some of the aquatic life found in bay´s fjords and estuaries here in Scandinavia. This fly is also a standard pattern in most fly boxes across Scandinavia. In tribute to Kim Nyborg, we have methodically collected the right dubbing, hook and hackle to form this sea trout classic
Slagteren (The Butcher Fly) #4
A Legendary Danish Sea Trout Fly
Slagteren (The Butcher Fly) is one of the most famous Danish sea trout flies and a pattern that has earned a permanent place in the fly boxes of generations of Scandinavian anglers.
Originally developed as a trout pattern, The Butcher quickly became a favourite among Danish sea trout anglers fishing estuaries, fjords, bays, and open coastlines. Its distinctive red and white colour combination, combined with a lively wing profile, creates a highly visible and attractive target that consistently produces fish.
The fly represents a wide range of aquatic life and small baitfish commonly found in Scandinavian waters. Whether fished fast across shallow flats or slowly through deeper channels, The Butcher maintains an attractive swimming action that often triggers aggressive takes from sea trout.
Few flies have achieved the status of The Butcher in Scandinavian fly fishing. Decade after decade, it continues to catch fish and remains a trusted pattern among experienced coastal anglers.
Not Just for Sea Trout – Bonefish love them too
Although originally developed for trout fishing, many anglers have found The Butcher surprisingly effective for bonefish and other flats species. Its slim silhouette, movement, and visibility make it an excellent searching pattern when fish are feeding actively in shallow water.
This versatility has made The Butcher a popular choice not only along Scandinavian coastlines but also among travelling fly anglers targeting tropical species.
Tied for Performance
This version is tied on a strong White Cape size #4 hook, providing excellent hooking performance and durability when fishing for powerful sea trout and other saltwater species.
The mobile wing materials create a natural swimming motion even at slow retrieve speeds, making the fly equally effective in calm conditions and rough coastal water.
