Designed for Night Fishing
The Black Surface Shrimp is made for one of the most exciting ways of targeting sea trout:
fishing after dark.
At night, sea trout can move into surprisingly shallow water and feed close to the surface.
A large, dark fly can create a strong silhouette against the night sky, while its movement
close to the surface can help the fish locate the fly in darkness.
Do not automatically assume that a fast retrieve is necessary. Experiment with the speed and
let the fish tell you what they want. A slow, controlled retrieve can be highly effective,
especially when sea trout are moving close to the surface.
Black Surface Shrimp
Black Surface Shrimp is a large surface fly designed specifically for
night fishing for sea trout. At approximately 8 cm in total length, with a
body length of around 3.7 cm, this is a substantial shrimp pattern with a strong presence on
the water.
The dark profile of the Black Surface Shrimp makes it particularly interesting for fishing
after dark, when sea trout can move into shallow water and feed close to the surface. Its
size, silhouette and movement give the fly a strong presence in low-light conditions.
The Black Surface Shrimp is tied on approximately a size #2 hook.
Per Fischer’s Tips for Night Sea Trout Fishing
Per Fischer from Fishmadman has extensive experience fishing for sea trout
after dark, and his practical advice is simple: keep the setup straightforward and be
prepared to fish through the quiet periods.
Leader Length
A total leader length of approximately 10 ft is a good starting point for
night fishing.
Tippet
Per Fischer recommends approximately 0.30 mm tippet for night fishing.
There is generally little reason to go thinner at night, and the heavier tippet also helps
reduce problems with knots and tangles.
Nylon Rather Than Fluorocarbon
For this type of fishing, Per recommends nylon rather than fluorocarbon.
A floating polyleader can also be used as part of the setup.
Be Patient During the Night
One of the most important things to understand about night fishing is that sea trout are not
necessarily active throughout the entire night.
Fish can begin to become active before sunset, with activity around sunset sometimes followed
by a longer quiet period. Once it becomes properly dark, the fish can return and activity may
increase again later in the night.
According to Per Fischer’s experience, there can be particularly interesting periods around
1–2 AM. Activity can then decrease again before another possible period of
activity during the early morning hours, sometimes around 6 AM.
This means that a quiet period does not necessarily mean that the fishing is over. Night
fishing can involve long periods of waiting between periods of activity, so patience is an
important part of the game.
Fishing the Black Surface Shrimp
Fish the Black Surface Shrimp with a controlled retrieve and pay attention to the movement
created by the fly. Its substantial size and dark profile give it a strong presence when
fished close to the surface.
When fishing at night, you cannot rely on seeing the fly in the same way as during daylight.
Instead, concentrate on the movement of the line, the surface disturbance and the feel of
the fly as it works through the water.
Cover water systematically and vary your retrieve until you find the speed the fish prefer.
A sea trout following a surface fly may take suddenly, so keep fishing the fly all the way
through the retrieve and into the final part of the cast.

Night Fishing for Sea Trout
There is something special about fishing a large dark surface fly after dark. Once daylight
disappears, the focus changes. You are no longer watching the fly clearly on the water.
Instead, you fish by the movement of the fly, the surface disturbance and the feeling of the
line.
The Black Surface Shrimp is designed for precisely this type of fishing.
Its substantial size, dark profile and surface-oriented presentation make it a dedicated
choice when you want to target sea trout close to the surface during the hours of darkness.
Fish it patiently. Keep it moving. Cover water. And don’t give up simply because the night
goes quiet.
Sometimes the next take comes when you least expect it.
